UNC Department of Radiology congratulates Professor of Radiology Charles T. Burke, MD, FSIR, FACR, on his induction as a Fellow of the American College of Radiology (FACR) at the ACR Annual Meeting in May 2021. Dr. Burke is among only 10 percent of ACR members who are elected and approved as ACR Fellows by the ACR Board of Chancellors. The FACR designation is awarded to ACR members who have a history of service to the College, to organized radiology, and to teaching and/or research within the field.

Dr. Burke has a distinguished record of leadership and service within UNC Radiology, the American College of Radiology and the field of radiology. Within UNC Radiology, he has held high-level positions in administration, clinical services and education, including: 1) Executive Vice Chair; 2) Vice Chair of Strategy; 3) Vice Chair of Interventional Services; 4) Chair – Vascular-Interventional Radiology (VIR) Quality and Safety Committee; 5) VIR Division Chief; and 6) VIR Fellowship Director. In recognition of his teaching excellence, Dr. Burke was chosen by graduating residents as the 2004 Charles A. Bream Teaching Award recipient.

In the field of radiology, Dr. Burke’s leadership and contributions to the Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR) and his subspecialty earned him selection as an SIR Fellow (FSIR) in 2013. He also served as a long-time American Board of Radiology (ABR) Oral Boards examiner in Interventional Radiology.

Dr. Burke contributes both expertise and leadership to the ACR at the national and state chapter levels. Within the ACR, his past and ongoing service includes: 1) Appropriateness Criteria in IR Panelist; 2) Interventional Radiology Panelist (ACR Annual Meeting); and 3) IR Education Committee member. Within the ACR’s state chapter (North Carolina Radiological Society), Dr. Burke has served in multiple high-level leadership positions, including: President, Vice President, Executive Council member and Councilor. Dr. Burke’s IR scholarly expertise has been featured in the Journal of American College of Radiology (JACR) multiple times.

UNC Radiology Executive Vice Chair J. Keith Smith, MD, PhD, FACR, was inducted as a Fellow of the ACR in 2020. He noted: “This is a well-deserved honor and recognition of the contributions to the ACR and our specialty that Charles has made throughout his career.”

Dr. Burke joins nine UNC Department of Radiology faculty who are Fellows of the American College of Radiology — Drs. Matthew A. Mauro, Joseph KT Lee, Mauricio Castillo, Lynn Fordham, Valerie Jewells, Cherie Kuzmiak, Jordan Renner, J. Keith Smith, and Paul Molina.
