In April 2017, Director of Quality and Safety and Professor of Radiology Dr. Valerie Jewells was inducted as one of three new Fellows of the American Osteopathic College of Radiology (AOCR) at its 2017 Annual Convention in Las Vegas, NV.

The Department would like to recognize Dr. Valerie Jewells for her April induction as one of only three new Fellows of the American Osteopathic College or Radiology (AOCR) at its 2017 Annual Convention in Las Vegas, NV. As AOCR’s Fellowship criteria notes, the honor is bestowed upon members who have demonstrated “outstanding contributions to the healing art, to the practice of radiology, to research or for such other meritorious services have reflected credit upon this organization and the osteopathic profession at large.” Over the past decade, Jewells has promoted the AOCR’s mission exceptionally as an ongoing AOCR invited lecturer, serving on the AOCR committees for continuing medical education and residency accreditation. She has served also as AOCR Annual Conference Program Chair in 2011 and will again do so in 2019.

Over 15+ years at UNC, Dr. Jewells has been an active participant in clinical, didactic and research initiatives at the institutional, specialty- and subspecialty-specific levels. Amongst her leadership roles and honors: 1) Grand Rounds invited lecturer for multiple School of Medicine departments (eg, Opthalmology, Neurology, Neurosurgery); 2) UNC/Duke quarterly inter-institutional combined Head & Neck conference active participant (2008-2012); 3) Neuroradiology Selection Committee for Abstracts Chair (RSNA Annual Meeting / 2013-2015); and 4) American Journal of Neuroradiology (AJNR)’s Reviewer Recognition Award (2011-2016). Specific to specialty, Jewells has been a highly involved member of the American College of Radiology (ACR), serving as an ongoing delegate/alternate delegate for its executive committee since 2001. In 2012, she was inducted as a Fellow of the American College of Radiology (FACR). Her leadership roles at the state level include serving as the North Carolina Radiological Society (NC ACR)’s former President (2009-2010); Vice President (2008-2009); Annual Conference Chair (2009); and current Fellowship Chair (2013-present).

As a neuroradiology researcher, Jewells has authored numerous book chapters and refereed journal articles on a range of topics, including stroke, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, head and neck imaging in oncology and benign disease, pediatric MRI in evaluating cochlear nerve deficiency, animal studies assessing Meniere’s disease, and a new PET agent for inflammation. In the past decade, she has served as an Investigator and/or Principal Investigator on several funded studies, many focused on multi-modality imaging in MS patients.

As Valerie states, “It is an honor to be inducted as a Fellow in the AOCR, particularly since much of the work has been enjoyable and has led to my personal growth as a radiologist.”
