UNC Department of Radiology would like to congratulate Professor of Radiology Amir H Khandani, MD, Dr med*, on being elected President of the American Board of Science in Nuclear Medicine (ABSNM), for a two-year term (June 2021 – June 2023). Dr. Khandani has served on the ABSNM’s Executive Board since June 2017, and his election as President directly follows his two-year service as the ABSNM’s Vice President.  Dr. Khandani now leads the only national board that offers certification in radiopharmaceutical science, radiation protection, nuclear medicine physics and instrumentation, and molecular imaging science. He takes on the ABSNM’s top Executive Board post with almost 20 years of leadership experience at the institutional and national levels in a field related to the ABSNM-governed disciplines.

As both UNC Radiology’s Molecular Imaging and Therapeutics (Mit) Division Chief and as PET Medical Director at UNC’s Biomedical Research Imaging Center (BRIC), Dr. Khandani works with the Department’s radiochemistry/radiopharmacy program to develop novel PET (PET/MR and PET/CT) imaging and radionuclide therapeutic agents to deliver safe patient care in this highly regulated field. He is also UNC Hospitals’ Medical Director of the School of Nuclear Medicine Technology and Molecular Imaging. This role has established him as a leader of molecular imaging/nuclear medicine education of all levels of learners, including radiology residents, medical students, and technologists.  In research, Dr. Khandani collaborates with both UNC School of Medicine and external researchers. His collaborative studies focus on developing novel PET radiotracers as imaging biomarkers for therapy planning and monitoring, some of which lead to novel, dual-function diagnostic and therapeutic tools (theranostics).

Regionally and nationally, Dr. Khandani is a respected leader and academic expert in the interconnected fields of nuclear medicine and molecular imaging and therapeutics. For the Southeastern Chapter of the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging (SNMMI), Dr. Khandani has served as President and has regularly presented invited lectures at the Society’s annual national meetings. His service as an expert in nuclear medicine and molecular imaging at national radiological societies is wide-ranging. Recurring roles related Dr. Khandani’s expertise include serving as a Program Committee member, moderator and panelist at RSNA Scientific Assembly and Annual Meetings, and Program Director of the Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging Update at the American College of Radiology (ACR)’s annual Review Course. He is also an active member of American College of Radiology (ACR)’s Committee on Nuclear Medicine Accreditation.

Dr. Khandani noted: “Being the first president of ABSNM with an MD degree and a doctorate, one of my goals is to bring direct clinical perspective to the great work the [ABSNM] has been accomplishing. This appointment is a great honor and responsibility. I look forward to leading the Board over the next two years.”
