It’s been our busiest year yet – our medical student-centric educational and advising programs are flourishing! It’s currently block 11 in academic year 2019-2020 for undergraduate medical education (UME), and we have the following to report: course evaluations student scores remain at historical highs, course directors and formal didactic curriculum lecturers have continued their hard work during students’ individualization phase fourth year students, and large group and small group lecturers continue to meet with foundation phase first and second year students.

Beyond the lectures, during this academic year we have expanded UNC medical students’ understanding and favorable impression of radiology with radiology and interventional radiology interest groups (RIG and IRIG) events, career goal advising for four UNC students participating in the 2020 NRMP Match, and four new student projects. The “Imaging in” series of educational modules launched with Endocrinology in October 2019, and 97.3% of the second year class cohort e-participated; our department is participating mightily in the Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS) SOM new curriculum; InstaRadiology social media unknown case series launched successfully in the Cardio block in November 2019 for the first year class cohort; Ultrasound Scholarly Concentration Program has launched as a new longitudinal experience for students, paired with volunteer faculty mentors, to curate additional experiences that individualize the student experience at UNC School of Medicine and promote scholarly work. Expecting 2-5 students in the inaugural class of Ultrasound SCP, we instead accepted 13 wonderful applicants!

Final words to sincerely thank Drs. Leon Bacchus and Katrina McGinty for outstanding work, as their complete their time as course directors for the Cardiopulmonary and Body Imaging courses respectively. To echo medical student sentiments, you’ve shown strong desires to teach and include our students, fostering positive and inclusive learning environments. Dr. Ertan Pamulkar has taken the reins of the Cardiopulmonary course.
