The Department would like to congratulate Assistant Professor of Radiology Dr. Ersan Altun for being chosen to receive the 2018 Charles A. Bream Award for excellence in teaching. Ersan Altun, MD

Since joining the Department in 2014, Altun has become Board Certified and served as Abdominal Imaging clinical teaching faculty of both residents and fellows. Over his last four years at UNC, Altun has made several additions to his already existing scientific contributions. He has co-authored a textbook entitled, “Liver Imaging: MRI with CT Correlation” and co-edited the 4th Edition of a major textbook — “Abdominal-Pelvic MRI” — as well as authoring many other book chapters. In addition, Altun has authored and co-authored 15 original/peer-reviewed articles, focusing mostly on MRI applications in the abdomen and pelvis.

Additionally, Altun has been serving as the Guest Editor for MRI Clinics of North America and is a reviewer for high impact journals such as Journal of Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Abdominal Imaging. Altun continues to collaborate on clinical research projects with other departments at UNC-CH School of Medicine, as well as institutions around the world. He also holds an Associate Professorship in Diagnostic Radiology in his home country, Turkey.

2017-2018 Chief Resident Dr. Andy Barnes presents the 2018 Charles A. Bream Award to Dr. Ersan Altun

Altun noted: “As radiology faculty physicians, training future generations of radiologists is one of the privileges and obligations of our profession. Since the residency training will shape the values, attitudes, behavior and ethics of our young colleagues, it should stimulate intellectual curiosity, excelling in high-quality patient care and professionalism. Focusing on these principles, I always aim to provide relevant, up-to-date lectures, timely, effective and constructive feedback and am willing to devote additional time when needed. So far, I have had the opportunity of knowing and contributing to the training of more than 30 Diagnostic Radiology residents in the Department. Observing their transformation into skilled, young radiologists has been a pleasure and a rewarding experience.
