Prerequisites: Ideally a second year AA student, but open to earlier rotations.  CAA program must have an affiliation agreement in place.  Affiliation agreements can be worked on after accepted to rotation.

Rotation Blocks:

September – April (dates TBD)
** Based on medical school calendar and
most consistent with Individualization Phase rotation blocks **
Application: Application cycle: 1/1/2026-2/28/2026
(Early submissions accepted, but do not improve chances).

Scheduling / Notification Cycle:

March 2026: 1st or 2nd week of March through 3/31/25 at latest
* Students have 2 weeks from notification to accept or decline one (1) rotation.

Students must submit:
1)  Academic records (not letters of good standing)
2)  A brief statement outlining the reasons for wanting to rotate at UNC (preference for ties to NC, desire to work in NC)
3)  Selection of specific rotation block (with the option to apply for multiple blocks to increase chances of acceptance).

Max Enrollment: 3 students per rotation block
Duration: 4 weeks (see above for rotation blocks based on UNC medical school calendar)
Clinical: Yes, combination of weekdays, night shifts (trauma, L&D), 2 weekend shifts.  Pre- and/or Post- call days depending on assignment

Learning Objectives:

The primary objective of the rotation is to provide insight and training in the principles of anesthesia and intraoperative care. Experience will include:

  • Pre- and post-operative evaluation of patients, with direct patient responsibility
  • Care of the anesthetized patient
  • Clinical pharmacology and physiology of the perioperative period

Principles and practice of both regional and inhalational anesthetic techniques including intravenous therapy, principles of the intravenous administration of drugs, airway management and endotracheal intubation, cardiovascular monitoring, and care of critically ill patients during the operative period

Rotations include:

  • Tertiary Care ORs (wide variety of cases)
  • Ambulatory Surgery Center
  • Outpatient GastroIntestinal (G.I.)
  • Trauma/General Call
  • Labor & Delivery
  • Pediatrics

Learning Activities:

Preoperative assessments and procedures such as intubations, mask ventilation and intravenous catheters

Patient Interviews:

  • Set up an anesthetic care and ventilator
  • Interact with residents, attendings, CAA’s, CRNAs and nurses

Evaluation:

Students will be observed and evaluated by attendings, residents, and CAA’s as they perform the above activities.  Feedback provided per students institution.  Only two absences are allowed during the rotation, including planned absences. All planned absences need to be cleared through the course director prior to the start of the elective.  Other school requirements need to be discussed with the Faculty Director and Anesthesiology Educational Chief Resident.

Special Note to Visiting Students:

UNC Department of Anesthesiology will NOT accept students for “Off-Block” dates. You must apply for the scheduled UNC dates to be offered a rotation.
