Congratulations to Dr. Jean Cook, Associate Professor of Biochemistry & Biophysics, who was recently elected as a Fellow to the 2012 UNC Academy of Educators in recognition of her outstanding teaching efforts at UNC-Chapel Hill.

The UNC-CH School of Medicine Academy of Educators was founded in October 2006 as a part of the School’s strategic plan to enhance research and scholarship towards excellence in teaching. Academy membership is awarded to faculty members who demonstrate excellence in teaching over the course of the most recent five years based on student, resident and peer assessments. Additionally, membership is also be awarded to faculty members who demonstrate leadership by playing a major role in curriculum management and/or innovation as evidenced by chairing major committees, directing courses and/or engaging in education scholarship.

Dr. Cook was selected for membership for her outstanding direct teaching of medical students and/or residents and mentoring of other teachers. Dr. Cook is currently an Associate Professor of Biochemistry and Biophysics who maintains a research lab that focuses on understanding how the DNA synthesis machinery is assembled at origins of DNA replication in mammalian cells. This work has clear ramifications for the understanding and treatment of cancer and other cell proliferative diseases. To learn more about her research, please visit the Cook lab website.
