The UNC School of Medicine has surpassed $500 million in research funding, marking a major milestone for the School’s expanding research enterprise.
In FY-19, the UNC School of Medicine received a total of $510,750,975.13 in funding, an increase of more than $48 million from FY-18.
“This accomplishment is a testament to our incredible faculty, students, and staff who come to work each day committed to advancing our knowledge of human health, and underscores the UNC School of Medicine’s commitment to being a global leader in basic and clinical research,” said Blossom Damania, PhD, Vice Dean for Research at the UNC School of Medicine.
Research funding for the School of Medicine has grown steadily over the last several years, increasing by more than $60 million since FY-17. This year’s funding increase represents a $24.5 million increase in federal research expenditures, and close to $10 million growth in funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
The numbers also reflect the breadth of the School of Medicine’s research enterprise, with 17 Departments, Centers, and Institutes receiving at least $10 million in funding, and 31 receiving at least $4 million in FY-19.
“The $500 million milestone of research funding is a tremendous achievement. Not only are we growing in total awards, but we are growing in overall scientific impact, improving the health and wellbeing of North Carolinians and others whom we serve,” said Cristy Page, MD, MPH, Executive Dean of the UNC School of Medicine. “We look forward to celebrating this success and many more to come.”
