SAI Training
The BRIC SAI offers several orientations and trainings that are needed to use our imaging equipment or to initiate a study with us.
All training, access, and service requests are now being made through iLab. You must first register with iLab and create an account before you can request a training session. Please follow this link for further instructions. If you have any questions about iLab or the training process please e-mail: bricsai@med.unc.edu

Optical Imaging Training
Group training is scheduled for the first Monday of each month, 2-3:30pm, for both the IVIS and AMI optical systems. Group training can be conducted on all three optical systems and is free of charge. If you require training outside of the standard dates and times, individual training can be arranged with SAI staff and the user will be charged machine and staff support time.
Follow these instructions to register for optical imaging training.
- Log into iLab at the following link: https://uncch.ilab.agilent.com/
- Click on “Biomedical Research Imaging Center (BRIC)” on the left hand side under “Core Facilities”.
- Click on “Request Services” along the top and then select “Small Animal Imaging”
- Finally select “Equipment/Software Training Request (Small Animal Imaging)” and fill out the information and submit. Check either “AMI” or IVIS” optical training.
- We will contact you to schedule your training.
If you cannot attend a group training or need training before the next session, we can schedule a private training with you. A training fee (one hour of machine time plus staff time) will apply to private trainings.
On training day, please come to the BRIC patient waiting area on the first floor of Marsico Hall. We will meet you there and take you to the facility in the building’s sub-basement.
Ultrasound Imaging Training
As with ultrasound imaging, training is required prior to initiating user operated ultrasound imaging. We have a Vevo2100 system in the upper basement of the Genetic Medicine Building and in the sub basement of Marsico Hall. Follow the instructions above for iLab account registration and then request ultrasound training via iLab. A training fee (one hour machine time plus staff time) will apply for ultrasound training.
- Log into iLab at the following link: https://uncch.ilab.agilent.com/
- Click on “Biomedical Research Imaging Center (BRIC)” on the left hand side under “Core Facilities”.
- Click on “Request Services” along the top and then select “Small Animal Imaging”
- Finally select “Small Animal Imaging Training Request” and fill out the information and submit.
- We will contact you to schedule your training.
DEXA Training
DEXA Training can be scheduled as needed by users with BRIC SAI Staff. Please contact the SAI at bricsai@med.unc.edu or call 919-966.2855 with questions. A training fee (one hour machine time plus staff time) will apply for DEXA training.

Marsico Hall Facility Orientation
Genetic Medicine Imaging Lab Orientation
For users that need to use the GM imaging lab, your lab orientation will be arranged once we receive your request in iLab.
Two systems are placed in the GMB Imaging Lab–IVIS Lumina and the VEVO-2100 Ultrasound. The orientation will be mainly focused on logistics, rules, card access, and dealing with an emergency. Operation of the imaging systems will be only briefly mentioned in the orientation. Users should attend training for either the IVIS system or the ultrasound separately before using the imaging system.

Safety training
Radiation Safety
- Anyone that has not approved for working with radioactivity materials should not enter the PET/CT or SPECT/CT lab for any experiments.
- To become an authorized user of radioactive material, you must register with the UNC Environment, Health and Safety Department ( http://www.ehs.unc.edu/radiation/), and attend the mandatory radiation safety train course (http://www.ehs.unc.edu/training/schedule.shtml#rad).
- Anyone working with the radioactive materials should follow the guidelines for radiation safety, such as wearing radiation badge, wearing gloves to handle RAMs. The radiation safety manual can be found here: Radiation Safety Manual.
- To obtain a radiation dose monitor badge, please contact Dr. Hong Yuan.
Biosafety
- Imaging users with BSL2 pathogens need to first contact Dr. Hong Yuan before beginning the study.
- BSL2 standard operating procedures are located in this file. SOP_BSL2 for Animal Imaging facility_2022_signed
- It is the users responsibility to to comply with the SOP for BSL2 imaging.
