What is open rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty surgery is designed to address any asymmetries or deformities of the external nasal appearance and aims to restore an overall symmetry to the nose that blends well with the rest of the facial appearance.

One of the most common approaches to rhinoplasty surgery is the “open” or external approach. This approach involves making a small incision on the base of the nose between the nostrils and, when connected to incisions inside the nose, allows the nasal skin to become elevated to expose the underlying nasal skeleton.

One of the benefits of the open or external approach is that the nasal cartilage and bones can be repositioned and then contoured within their midline anatomical positions. The open or external approach to rhinoplasty is “closed” with several small sutures on the skin between the nostrils, and the incision typically heals inconspicuously over time.

Ethnic Rhinoplasty Surgery at the UNC Center for Facial Aesthetics

One of the most important aspects of rhinoplasty surgery is to understand the patient’s preferences regarding their nasal appearance. Preparing for rhinoplasty surgery requires a thorough and detailed pre-operative discussion between the surgeon and patient about the patient’s personal desires and expectations. Part of this discussion includes determining a patient’s personal and specific preferences regarding nasal appearance, and to avoid offering every patient “the same nasal surgery”.  Ethnic rhinoplasty incorporates this individualized approach, while valuing any patient preferences to preserve their ethnic identity while undergoing rhinoplasty surgery to refine disproportions or asymmetries to the nose.
