Courtney, Adult Cochlear Implant Patient Review
Courtney is a long-term research participant in a study investigating the impact of individualized map settings on performance with a cochlear implant. Courtney is a Doctor of Audiology student and Audiology Extern at UNC Hospitals.
Below is her story in her own words:
I chose to participate in clinical research when I received my first cochlear implant in 2020 because I wanted to be a part of something that would benefit cochlear implant users for years to come. There is still so much more to learn about cochlear implants because they have only been FDA-approved for a few decades. Contributing and doing my part for the greater good was never a second thought when I was asked to participate.
Research has had a huge impact on my life, especially given that I am currently an audiology extern at UNC. I try my hardest to be as patient-centered as possible and use evidence-based practice to help facilitate the best care for the patients I see with supervisors. Research helps me do that! The research team at UNC has always been so supportive and amazing to work with, from when I was a participant to now as an extern. Each team member truly is passionate and cares for their work and patients. It is also really fulfilling and heartwarming for me to now have the experience of being on both sides of the audiology test booth, from the patient side to now as a student clinician!
I would not trade my position as a fellow cochlear implant user for the world. This December, I just had surgery for my second side, and I am so excited to see my progression through the next year as a bilateral cochlear implant user! My first cochlear implant changed my life entirely and gave me a new confidence. I went from being unable to effectively communicate with others who were wearing masks or talk on the phone (since age 13) to being able to communicate more easily in my day-to-day life. Now, I can call important people in my life often – just to talk!
Thank you to the UNC Research team for all you’ve done and will continue to do for many years to come! I also want to extend a huge thank you to all our willing patients who have dedicated their time to participating in research. We appreciate you and can’t thank you enough!
