Professionalism is a core competency for medical trainees across the spectrum of undergraduate and postgraduate medical education. Professionalism has many different definitions, but in general represents behaviors that define a profession. A survey of medical professional organizations demonstrates that definitions are extensive and varied. Most agree there are aspects that are immutable over time (empathy, honesty, confidentiality) and others that are evolving (appropriate dress, appropriate communication).

With the changing social climate, it is our goal to help students with the transition to medical professionalism and to recognize how certain actions or behaviors may be perceived as unprofessional before these need to get escalated to a formal disciplinary committee. To achieve this goal, we formed the COmmittee for Professionalism Education (COPE), a blinded committee that focuses on early intervention for professionalism lapses. Our committee, formed of faculty and student representatives from each class, serves as a bridge between unofficial feedback conversations and the Student Progress Committee. Blinded professional lapses are reviewed by the committee and recommendations are made focusing on feedback, education, and remediation.
