North Carolina Children’s Hospital
The North Carolina Children’s Hospital opened as a separate, state-of-the-art structure in 2002. Each year, more than 70,000 children from all 100 North Carolina counties come to UNC for over 200,000 visits for diagnosis and treatment. This family-focused hospital serves as the primary teaching facility for UNC pediatric residents. It adjoins the Adult, Women’s, Neurosciences and Cancer Hospitals which make up the local UNC Hospitals campus. Carolina Air Care, a sophisticated ground and helicopter transport system, provides transportation for children between community hospitals and the NC Children’s Hospital.
The pediatric inpatient service has an 88-bed capacity and 5,900 surgical and pediatric admissions each year (this does not include infants in the neonatal unit or newborn nursery). Most admissions are referrals from practices and community hospitals throughout North Carolina and surrounding states. The inpatient Pediatrics service consists of 5 ward teams with the following composition:
- Green Team: General Pediatrics (including patients requiring close consultation with Nephrology, ID, Rheumatology and Metabolic specialists)
- Purple Team: General Pediatrics (including Neurology and Endocrine patients)
- Blue Team: Pediatric Pulmonary
- Red Team: Pediatric Cardiology and Pediatric Gastroenterology
- Pediatric Hematology-Oncology
Inpatient care is also supplemented by a 24/7 Pediatric Hospitalist team.
The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit has a 20 bed capacity and is led by a growing team of dedicated intensivists.
The Newborn Critical Care Center has a 58-bed capacity with approximately 600 admissions yearly.
The North Carolina Children’s Hospital also provides comprehensive pediatric services in its Children’s Outpatient Center located on the ground floor of the Children’s Hospital. The outpatient clinics offer subspecialty care to the children of North Carolina with the following clinics on site:
- Allergy and Immunology
