Child and Adolescent Inpatient and Outpatient Care
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is a major academic center for assessment, treatment, research and teaching in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. The Department of Psychiatry has a longstanding commitment to supporting the emotional and physical wellbeing of children and their families. Children and families with mental health concerns can find comprehensive evaluation and treatment services provided by experienced specialists within our department. We also serve as a major consultative resource for patients, families, physicians, schools, and courts, as well as local and national mental health agencies.
NEW! UNC Health Youth Behavioral Health Hospital
UNC Youth Behavioral Health Hospital (YBH) is a 54-bed, 24-hour, locked psychiatric facility located in Butner, North Carolina. There are four units dedicated to serving children and adolescent with mental health diagnoses, dual diagnoses, substance misuse and complex behaviors, including those with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities and with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

At UNC Health Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Prestwick, you’ll find healthcare professionals dedicated to supporting the emotional and physical wellbeing of children and their families. Our programs and clinics offer personalized evaluations, diagnoses and treatments. Our teams also serve as resources for schools and outside healthcare professionals as needed.

To obtain an appointment for your child to be seen in our outpatient clinic, please call (984) 974-5217. If your child is experiencing a mental health emergency, please call 911 or go to your nearest emergency room. Please note that admission to our inpatient units is via referral from the child’s medical provider only.
Information for Referring Providers
If you have evaluated a child or adolescent and would like to make a referral for direct admission to our inpatient units, please call the UNC Hospitals Transfer Center at (800) 806-1968. Please note that we are only able to accept calls from mental health providers on this line.
