We are pleased to report another busy and successful academic year for our residency program, and we’re grateful to our ever-broadening base of engaged and supportive faculty.

Dr. Sheri Jordan Diagnostic Radiology Program Director

Among high points of this past academic year are the 1) American College of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) approval of Diagnostic Radiology (DR) residency complement increase from 32 to 36 spots; 2) exemplary scholarly performance at local and national meetings, including the 2016 Radiological Society of North America (RSNA), 2017 Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR) and American College of Radiology (ACR) national meetings; and 3) recruitment of nine accomplished individuals for the 2018 National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) Match season.

This spring it is an honor to recognize our department’s newest Academy of Educators (AoE) May 11th inductees: Professor of Radiology Dr. Valerie Jewells and 2nd-year resident (PGY3) Dr. Joshua Wallace. The UNC School of Medicine (SOM)’s venerable AoE supports institutional teaching and faculty development and selects a membership committed to this mission. Drs. Jewells and Wallace join nine others currently in the Department as AoE members: Drs. Katherine Birchard, PGY3 Clayton Commander, Bob Dixon, Lynn Fordham, Ben Huang, Sheri Jordan, Paul Molina, Daniel Nissman and Keith Smith. The Department is proud of its strong base of faculty and trainees honored by AoE.

It’s also the perfect season to recognize our June 30th graduating R4s, all on to fellowships at top-tier programs: Drs. Kelly Hastings (Musculoskeletal Imaging: Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology); Cody Schwartz, Lana Rivers & Bryan Hoag (Musculoskeletal Imaging: UNC), Scott Abedi (Neuroradiology: Duke), Kavya Reddy (Neuroradiology: UNC); Mark Smith (Neuroradiology: University of CA – Davis); and Alexander Wyckoff (Neuroradiology: University of TX – Southwestern). Over four years, they’ve each shown amazing dedication to our patients’ care, and we’re proud to send them well-prepared for independent practice.
