In summer 2017, Professor of Radiology and UNC Idea Group and BRIC Image Analysis Core Director Dr. Dinggang Shen received two major National Institute of Health (NIH) awards: 1) five-year R01 funding to develop a learning-based surgical approach to planning craniomaxillofacial (CMF) surgeries; and 2) four-year R01 3rd-phase renewal funding to develop a set of novel learning-based methods to transfer image contrast and tissue/anatomical labels of 7T MRI of training subjects to 3T MRI of new subjects.

UNC’s School of Medicine and UNC Department of Radiology were deeply saddened by the loss of two long-time faculty members in March 2017: Chairman Emeritus Dr. James “Jim” Scatliff / Professor Emeritus Dr. Robert “Bob” McLelland.

UNC Department of Radiology faculty have long contributed to the American College of Radiology (ACR)’s mission as leaders both at the state chapter (NC Radiological Society/NCRS) and national levels. Over recent decades, many NC Radiological Society members from UNC have been elected to all NC Radiological Society officer ranks. At the national level, six Department faculty in the past 15 years have been chosen as American College of Radiology Fellows (FACR) for their high levels of involvement in ACR & NCRS initiatives.
