Warren P. Newton, MD, MPH

 Warren Newton 

Warren P. Newton, MD, MPH has served as the Executive Associate Dean for Education at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine since September 1, 2008.  He is the Chief Education Officer for the UNC School of Medicine, responsible for the curriculum and programs for medical students, continuing medical education and he also contributes to the direction of Graduate Medical Education at UNC Hospitals.  He is actively involved with AHEC and the planning of the expansion of UNC medical school, residencies and practice support across the state.  His priorities for medical students for 2008-2009 are:  1) engaging key stake holders – faculty, chairs and students, 2) reorganizing the Office of Medical Education, 3) supporting innovations in advising, curriculum and IS systems.

Dr. Newton has substantial experience as a teacher and innovator in education.  A graduate of Yale University with a double major in History and Biology, he attended Northwestern University Medical School, and was selected as a member of the LCME as a medical student.  He trained at UNC in Family Medicine, Epidemiology and the Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars Program.  Dr. Newton has won several teaching awards, taught in 16 different courses at UNC over his career, served as Residency Director in Family Medicine from 1992-97 and led/taught in many different fellowship programs.  He has over 80 publications with students and residents.  His personal teaching focus now includes developing a new kind of fourth year course integrating clinical care and quality science for fourth year medical students and work on a national core curriculum for Family Medicine.

Dr. Newton also serves as the William B. Aycock Professor and Chair of Family Medicine and Adjunct Professor of Epidemiology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is Chair of the Board of Advisors for the Cecil G. Sheps Health Services Research Center, Founding Chair of Community Care of Central Carolina (CCCC), Founding Chair of Advisory Board and directs the Carolina Health Net uninsured initiative.  He leads the North Carolina Improving Performance in Practice Initiative, the pilot of a national effort by the specialty societies and boards of Family Medicine, Internal Medicine and Pediatrics to improve dramatically the quality of chronic disease care in primary care practice. Nationally, he has served as President of the Association of Departments of Family Medicine (ADFM) and was the Founding Chair of the Council of Academic Family Medicine (CAFM). He currently serves on the Board of Directors of the American Board of Family Medicine, the Family Practice Inquiries Network, Up to Date, and the North Carolina Healthcare Quality Alliance.
