Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Mission Statement

Diverse Group
Standing together

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Department of Anesthesiology actively promotes diversity, equity, and inclusion as vitally important to its present and future success. We understand that an equitable and safe multiracial, multiethnic, and multicultural environment produces innovative thinking, research, and learning. We seek to provide an environment for learning and working where differences are valued, and each person in the department is supported and offered an equitable opportunity to achieve their academic and professional goals.

Policies that promote such an environment are integrated into all department activities, specifically:

  • Recruitment and retention policies and practices that create and maintain a professional environment that is representative of a diverse community.
  • Academic programs, services, and professional development that create an environment which promotes equitable and inclusive success, as well as including services that promote the health and well-being of all members of the department.

DEI Committee

The Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Committee of the Department of Anesthesiology acknowledges and celebrates the belief that diverse perspectives and experiences improves the strength of an organization. We will actively work towards the creation of an equitable, diverse, welcoming, and inclusive work environment where individuals of all ages, races, ethnicities, cultures, religions, genders, sexual orientations, and abilities are able to thrive and achieve their personal academic and professional goals.

As per SOM Strategic Plan, Forward Together, the committee will use an equity lens and collaborate with departmental leadership to make policy and procedural recommendations regarding the recruitment, retention, and promotion of individuals from underrepresented or marginalized groups at all departmental ranks, including but not limited to Faculty, Staff, CRNAs, Residents/Fellows, Anesthesia Techs, and Research Division, as well as to encourage transparency regarding the same. As a committee, we are dedicated to providing all members of the Anesthesiology community with a supportive space and the tools to learn about, discuss, and ask questions about issues and topics related to diversity and identity.
