Alex Guseman, PhD, NIH MOSAIC Scholar

We would like to congratulate Dr. Alex Guseman (Chemistry ’18 MCBP cohort ’14) on earning a K99 from the MOSAIC program. Dr. Guseman is a postdoctoral fellow at The University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in Pennsylvania. He is studying how glycans can be targeted on viral glycoproteins to inhibit viral entry. His project is titled “Developing Lectins as Inhibitors of Coronavirus Spike Proteins”

Dr. Guseman says “I am so excited to join the ASBMB MOSAIC Cohort, I have looked up to many of these fantastic scientists for years and to be able to join their community will be incredible. I am looking forward to harnessing this network for advice as I prepare to transition to my own independent career.”

The Maximizing Opportunities for Scientific and Academic Independent Careers (MOSAIC) program is part of NIH’s efforts to enhance diversity within the academic biomedical research workforce, and is designed to facilitate the transition of promising postdoctoral researchers from diverse backgrounds, for example individuals from groups underrepresented in the biomedical research workforce at the faculty level, into independent, tenure-track or equivalent research-intensive faculty positions.

Alex joins a cohort within the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB). He and his cohort will receive individualized coaching and networking and presentation opportunities tailored to her individual needs. Dr. Guseman’s faculty coach for the ASBMB cohort will be announced in the coming weeks.
