We are highlighting interns in our labs, here are just a few from the UNC SURE summer program: Gabriela García (Baker lab) and Saksham Saksena (Strahl lab). UNC SURE is an NSF-funded Summer Undergraduate Research Experience Program in Biological Mechanisms at UNC-Chapel Hill.

Gabriela García (Baker lab)

Gabriela GarcíaMy name is Gabriela Garcia and I’m a rising junior at Stockton University in South Jersey. I am currently studying Biology and have a minor in chemistry and Spanish. I’m participating in the SURE program this summer and working in the Baker lab. After college, I am looking forward to attending graduate school with the hopes of teaching. In my free time, I enjoy doing puzzles, embroidery, and baking.

Saksham Saksena (Strahl lab)

Saksham SaksenaI am a rising junior at Vanderbilt University. My hometown is Memphis, TN. I am here at UNC for the summer as part of the NSF-funded summer undergraduate research experience in biological mechanisms. During the summer, I am working at the Strahl Lab investigating a histone reader protein in yeast. One fun fact about me is that I have been a vegetarian my whole life.

UNC SURE SUMMER

sure 2023 studentsThe Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE-REU) Program in Biological Mechanisms at UNC-Chapel Hill provides talented undergraduate students the opportunity to carry out independent research projects under the guidance of faculty mentors to study a variety of approaches to mechanistic studies. For 10 weeks during the summer, undergraduate students are immersed in the SURE-REU (REU program) experience; they work side-by-side with graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and faculty who serve as role models and as mentors.
