Maria Camila Arango

Camila Arango, a Ph.D. student in the Department of Biochemistry & Biophysics (Starbird Lab), was selected as one of just 22 international participants for the inaugural Salamanca International Advanced Biophysics and Structural Biology Course, organized by Eva Nogales and Carlos Bustamante. The course, held from June 29th to July 5th in Salamanca, Spain, provides intensive training in cutting-edge techniques such as smFRET, optical tweezers, super-resolution microscopy, cryo-EM, and cryoET.

Dr. Nogales, who previously presented the Mary Ellen Jones Seminar at UNC in October, advertised this new opportunity that is set to become an annual event. Applications for the next course will open in late fall. More information is available on the course website.

Throughout the week, Camila engaged in discussions and hands-on sessions with leading scientists including Eva Nogales, Carlos Bustamante, Taekjip Ha, Xiaowei Zhuang, Elizabeth Villa, David Rueda, Jose Maria Valpuesta, and Richard Henderson. The course concluded with a keynote lecture by Nobel laureate Richard Henderson on the development of cryoEM, after which Camila had the opportunity to discuss the early history and future accessibility of cryoEM with him.
