Odessa Goudy, Ph.D. candidate in Kuhlman lab

This month we are excited to announce that Odessa Goudy, a graduate student in Brian Kuhlman’s lab, recently received a Rosetta Commons Outreach Fellowship! As a Rosetta Commons Fellow, Odessa attended the 2021 SACNAS National Diversity in STEM (NDiSTEM) Digital Conference and the virtual 2021 11th Annual oSTEM Conference11th Annual oSTEM Conference. She participated in the virtual booth and poster sessions to help Rosetta Commons attract talented young scientists and provide them with resources for graduate school exploration.

As a graduate student, Odessa is passionate about science communication and providing younger students with the resources and opportunities to explore science. With this desire, Odessa co-founded Shadow A Scientist, a high school outreach initiative at the University of North Carolina. Shadow A Scientist offers high school students the unique opportunity to directly observe experiments and be taught by a leading UNC researcher.

For those interested, the Rosetta Commons’ summer National Science Foundation-funded Research Experience for Undergraduates application is now open! Over the past couple of years, the Kuhlman Lab has welcomed multiple undergraduates into the lab for the summer! Previous projects have spanned computational protein design of de novo helices and stabilization of the Dengue virus E-dimer.
