The UNC School of Medicine’s fiscal year 2020 total research funding reached $535,240,423, a growth of more than $24 million from the fiscal year 2019. The UNC School of Medicine surpassed the $500 million milestone in fiscal year 2019, and the research enterprise has continued to grow since then.
“The year 2020 has been an incredibly difficult year for our researchers amidst the campus-wide shut down and COVID-19 pandemic,” said Blossom Damania, PhD, Vice Dean for Research at the UNC School of Medicine. “This did not stop our incredible faculty, students, and staff from pursuing their research that advances our knowledge of human health, and this underscores the UNC School of Medicine’s commitment to being a global leader in basic and clinical research.”
Research funding for the School of Medicine has grown steadily over the last several years, increasing by more than $87 million since fiscal year 2017. This year’s funding increase includes a $14-million growth in funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
The UNC School of Medicine research funding of over $535 million accounts for more than half of all research funding at UNC-Chapel Hill, which surpassed the billion-dollar milestone this past year.
“We are tremendously proud that our total awards continue to grow, and that our outstanding researchers are at the forefront of their fields,” said Cristy Page, MD, MPH, Executive Dean of the UNC School of Medicine. “We are constantly working to expand our scientific impact and improve the health and well-being of the communities we serve. Right now, this includes significant contributions to combat the COVID-19 pandemic.”
