Carolyn joined the department in early October as the executive assistant to Aziz Sancar, M.D., Ph.D., the newly announced 2015 Nobel Laureate in Chemistry for “for mechanistic studies of DNA repair.”
Prior to joining our department, Carolyn supported state-level higher education leaders, including UNC System General Administration, Vice-Chancellor of University Advancement, UNC Health Care executives in the areas of development, financial management, pre and post award grants management, human resource coordination, and office management. Ms. Clabo coordinated the initial visit of Chris Ellington to UNC Hospitals, who is now the president of UNC Health Care – Network Hospitals and Executive VP CFO UNC Hospitals at Chapel Hill.
In her new role, she will assist Dr. Sancar with the high volume of inquiries for his time from the UNC chancellor and UNC system wide administration, the press, from local, state, federal and international governments, the UN, and other organizations. It is anticipated that there will be numerous requests for Dr. Sancar to give speeches and attend various scientific events. Carolyn Clabo will manage and coordinate special projects for Dr. Sancar. She will coordinate his events, including the Nobel Prize trip to Stockholm, Sweden and make other travel arrangements. She will host all visitors, foreign delegations, and media visits to the Sancar lab. Carolyn will be on hand to assist the Sancar lab with human resource coordination for international hires, solve ITS technical support issues, and to assist with the procurement of supplies for his large laboratory facility.
The plan is that Carolyn will join the administrative office team after two years, if needed, to support the whole department of biochemistry and biophysics with various projects in the areas of communications, development, fundraising for scientific events, human resources, and information technology.
Please welcome Carolyn to our department!
