This week we are highlighting BCBP grad students and recent alumni for Graduate and Professional Student Appreciation Week. Dr. Jibo “Dylan” Zhang of the Strahl lab successfully defended his Ph.D. in the Fall. His current position is Process Development Scientist at KBI Biopharma. Congrats to Dr. Zhang!

National Academy of Sciences announced on January 24, 2022, that Carrie Partch Ph.D., Professor of chemistry & biochemistry at UC-Santa Cruz, has received an Award in Molecular Biology, recognizing a “recent notable discovery in molecular biology by a young scientist who is a citizen of the US.” Dr. Partch is an alumna of Biochemistry and Biophysics and the Aziz Sancar lab.

Conserved helix-turn-helix motif contributes differentially to #polyubiquitination in various #cellcycle E2 enzymes - via distinct donor/acceptor #ubiquitin interactions. A collaborative effort led by Kaeli Welsh (UNC Pharmacology) who is the lead author amongst the colleagues, Nick Brown (Pharmacology) and Joe Harrison (a former postdoc in Kuhlman lab) and in BCBP (Josh Boyer, Brenda Temple, Derek Bolhuis, Qi Zhang) and other colleagues.

The Coronavirus Variant Sequencing (CORVASEQ) Surveillance Program, led by a team of UNC researchers, has detected the Omicron SARS-CoV-2 variant in North Carolina. Together, members of the program have sequenced more than 10,000 samples from COVID-19 positive patients to track the spread and development of the virus across the state.
