On June 8, 2023, the Biochemistry and Biophysics department held an Ice Cream Social to kick off the summer and welcome our summer undergraduates and new members!

We are highlighting interns in our labs, here are just a few from the UNC SURE summer program: Gabriela García (Baker lab) and Saksham Saksena (Strahl lab). UNC SURE is an NSF-funded Summer Undergraduate Research Experience Program in Biological Mechanisms at UNC-Chapel Hill.

Dr. Odessa Goudy is the recipient of the 2023 Diane Harris Leadership Award for the Biochemistry and Biophysics Department. She is a 2023 Kuhlman lab and Biochemistry and Biophysics alumna. Read more about her recent award.

Gabrielle J. Dardis successfully defended her dissertation titled, “EZH2 Co-Activates NF-κB Targets with RelA in a PRC2-Independent Manner in Triple Negative Breast Cancer Cells” on May 19th, 2023, in the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics under the direction of Dr. Albert S. The Undergraduate Summer Fellowship Research Awards are awarded annually to outstanding undergraduate researchers. These awards were applied to the undergraduate’s research projects in the summer of 2023.

Congratulations to Amelia McCue and Thanh Phan, who have been selected to receive a Dissertation Completion Fellowship from The Graduate School for AY2023-2024!

The Brantley Award is given out to senior Biology majors for excellence in research in molecular, cell and developmental Biology. Maguire was mentored by Abid Khan in the Strahl lab.

The dissertation award is the highest level of graduate student scholarship. Recipients of the Dean’s Distinguished Dissertation Award are making outstanding contributions.

This publication was for a research project that he was working on at Boston Children’s Hospital before coming to UNC.

In a conversation with Amelia McCue, a 5th-year Ph.D. student in the lab, we tried to unravel what the lab is currently working on. Her work centers on targeted drug delivery, and the big problem she tries to solve involves the design of antibodies that can bind two different things (bi-specific antibodies).
