The UNC Department of Neurology brought together researchers, clinicians, trainees, and community members for Neurology Day 2026, a signature annual event celebrating the scope and impact of neurological research across the department. Held on May 14, 2026, the event highlighted clinical and basic science research as well as showcased neurology trainees.

Neurology Day serves as a department‑wide platform for sharing scientific advances spanning basic science, clinical research, and translational innovation. The afternoon began with a welcome from Dr. Ian Shih, Vice Chair of Research, who emphasized the department’s commitment to collaborative research and mentorship.
The program featured oral research presentations from trainees representing multiple areas of investigation. Dr. Faris Almubaslat, Adult Neurology Resident, presented resident research focused on improving diagnostic accuracy in electroencephalography. Clinical science research was presented by Dr. Krysten Lambeth, who shared innovative work using wearable ultrasound‑informed modeling to enhance exoskeleton‑assisted walking. Basic science insights were delivered by Dr. Giulia Fragola, whose research identified environmental toxicants linked to TDP‑43 pathology using high‑content microscopy screening.

Attendees also engaged with a robust poster program, with two dedicated poster sessions highlighting research from across the department. These sessions provided opportunities for in‑depth discussion, networking, and collaboration among faculty, trainees, and staff.

A highlight of the evening was the keynote address by Dr. Alison Goate, Professor and Chair of Genetics and Genomic Sciences at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. An internationally recognized leader in neurodegenerative disease genetics, Dr. Goate shared insights from more than three decades of groundbreaking work in Alzheimer’s disease and frontotemporal dementia research, including the discovery of key genetic mutations that continue to shape the field today.
Now in its third year, Neurology Day continues to grow as a forum for celebrating research, elevating trainee scholarship, and strengthening connections across UNC Neurology. The event underscores the department’s mission to advance neurological science and improve patient care through innovation, education, and collaboration.
