Benjamin C. Warf, MD, was the distinguished lecturer at the Fourth Annual Robert H. Wilkins, MD, Lectureship in Academic Neurosurgery hosted jointly by the UNC and Duke Neurosurgery Departments on February 20 at the Carolina Inn. Ninety guests dined and later enjoyed Dr. Warf’s talk titled, “Stumbling into Academia: The Unintended Adventure of a Missionary Neurosurgeon.”

New Wearable Device Uses Electric Fields to Treat Glioblastomas

For patients with glioblastomas (GBM), treatment options are limited and the tumors are often resistant. But a treatment called Optune might be changing that. “This is the first device approved to treat glioblastoma in the clinic,” says Simon Khagi, MD, director of the UNC Brain Tumor Program. “It’s a pretty big step for this disease because we really haven’t had anything new in a couple of decades.”
