Introduction

The COVID-19 pandemic has had an unprecedented impact on the well-being of the citizens of the United States, with millions of US citizens diagnosed with COVID-19 and deaths from COVID-19 continuing to snowball. The pandemic has also had the predicted major effects on the economy, with millions of people unemployed due to pandemic-related shutdown measures. Marsico Lung Institute researchers have been engaged in work to understand the virus, SARS-CoV-2, that leads to COVID-19 disease and to seek potential treatments. As Dean Wesley Burks, MD, said, referring to the School of Medicine’s COVID-19 research, “We are proud to play a central role in this work, and I truly believe we will have a positive impact on the course of this pandemic. We are not here by accident.”
