Ambulatory Care

The UNC Internal Medicine Clinic is a level 3 certified medical home, received NCQA Diabetes Recognition, and has received the award for the highest performing practice in the Primary Care Improvement Collaborative at UNC.  Categorical medicine residents average one half day clinic per week at Eastowne. Interns usually have about 35 patients in their panel during the first year, and will gain new patients as the year progresses.

Continuity Clinic

With our move to Eastowne, the continuity clinic experience has been enhanced by creating Eastowne Teams. Residents are assigned a consistent weekday of continuity clinic while they are on elective, working with a team of co-residents, care partners, and attendings. This greatly improves continuity for both residents and patients. Residents receive more meaningful feedback from attendings when they work together consistently.

CAR (Continuity Ambulatory Rotation) is a month-long rotation for interns that is split over 2-week blocks. Interns get extra time in their continuity clinic outside of their typical continuity day along with other GIM experiences including enhanced care clinic (for pain, hypertension, diabetes), hospital follow-up clinic, palliative care clinic, and dietary clinic among others.

Enhanced Care Clinic Support

As part of our medical home certification, we have several physician assistants, nurse practitioners and clinical pharmacists who work with residents to provide support for patients requiring anticoagulation, diabetes, and pain control. They see patients independently for dedicated follow up visits and will make any needed medication adjustments. Pain management is an independent program as a part of the Internal Medicine clinic. This is invaluable service that is offered to help manage patients requiring chronic narcotics. We also have several clinical care assistants who help to manage durable medical equipment paperwork and prior-authorization requests.

Clinic Week: Intern Subspecialty Experience

If interns are not on CAR block during elective time, they will participate in Clinic Week. This is a longitudinal experience where interns rotate through various subspecialty clinics during the year including GIM, Rheumatology, Nephrology, Cardiology, Allergy and Immunology, Geriatrics, Hematology/Oncology, Endocrinology, and Infectious Disease.

Longitudinal Clinic: Voluntary Upper Level Subspecialty Experience

Upper level residents who are interested in a specific field have the option of participating in a longitudinal clinic. This consists of a half day a week while on elective where residents are paired with a subspecialist in their area of interest. This experience fosters research and mentoring relationships and allows residents to have a better understanding of the outpatient component of their specialty.

UNC Internal Medicine Latino Clinic

The UNC Health Latino clinic at the Main campus was created in 2008 to provide bilingual and bicultural access and care to the growing Spanish-speaking population of North Carolina. The UNC Department of Medicine is a major participant in the Latino Clinic since its inception and is now its leader in providing equitable care to this population. A bilingual floating patient navigator assists patients before, during and after clinic visits with bilingual physicians in the general medicine and other specialty internal medicine clinics.

We invite interested new IM housestaff to be part of Latino Clinic. Interested housestaff are required to take and pass a bilingual provider oral exam administered by telephone by the UNC Health Interpreter’s office. IM housestaff who pass this exam will be offered the opportunity to have a continuity clinic panel of patients with a greater number of Spanish-speaking patients and be assigned to and supervised by bilingual faculty physicians.

Same Day Clinic

A dedicated outpatient rotation with both interns and residents to manage internal medicine patients with acute illnesses or injuries. Housestaff gain experience with common acute care management, office-based procedures, microscopy for wet-prep or crystal analysis.
