Linda Dominguez

Linda Dominguez, is a certified medical assistant with the UNC Neurology Clinic.

What is your background?

I am originally from Colorado, and moved to Durham in July 2019 after I accepted my current position in UNC Neurology. I have been a medical assistant since 2001, and consider myself a specialty CMA. My work history includes five years in cardiology, five years in health information management, and nine years in neurology. I am a second generation Mexican-American. My maternal and paternal grandparents were originally from Mexico, and migrated with their families when they were young. My parents met when they were 14 and 15, and raised the four of us with strong Mexican values, however, they did not teach us the Spanish language.

Why did you choose to work at UNC Neurology?

I chose to work here for the great things I had heard about the system and the UNC School of Medicine. I also chose this job due to the amazing opportunities available and what I would be able to offer my child by relocating to this area.

What is your favorite part of an ordinary day at UNC Neurology? 

I love learning, and I am able to learn something new at least once per day.

What something that’s pleasantly surprised you since joining UNC Neurology?

I was surprised by how included and part of a team I feel on a daily basis. Since the first day I started in UNC Neurology, I have always felt very welcomed and appreciated.

What have you gained from working at UNC Neurology?

A greater appreciation (more than I already had) for doctors. While working at UNC Neurology, I have been able to work with second-, third-, and fourth-year residents, and I am able to understand a little more about the sacrifices these amazing men and women make.

Who inspires you?

My son. His dad passed away when he was seven years old. It’s just been him and me ever since. He inspires me to be the best person I can be to everyone I meet.

If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why?

To slow down time. My son is a sophomore in high school, and I struggle each year as he moves to the next grade and gets closer to his senior year. Also, seeing my parents and loved ones aging makes me realize just how borrowed our time is.

Service, efficiency, quality

What type of impact do you want to leave?

That I made a difference – to the doctors, to the patients, to my friends.

How can the department help you achieve this goal?

By making sure I am acknowledged and simply thanked when I am appreciated.

Which areas do you see room for growth in UNC neurology?

Education – I feel there is so much to learn from every single person in UNC Neurology.
Communication – There are always ways to improve communication within the department.

Any advice you want to pass on?

You yourself will know if this is what you were put on earth to do. If you know you are making a difference to every single patient, and your soul feels at peace, you have found your calling.
