
On Friday, October 18, 2024, Dr. James F. Howard, Jr., M.D., FAAN was recognized as a recipient of the 2024 Distinguished Academic Achievement Award by the University of Vermont Larner College of Medicine Alumni Association. The Distinguished Academic Achievement Award is presented to alumni in recognition of outstanding scientific or academic achievement.
Dr. Howard is a practicing neurologist for over 45 years with a focus on myasthenia gravis and EMG. He is a national and internationally recognized educator and leader in the field of myasthenia gravis and serves as and advisor to multiple pharmaceutical companies developing clinical trial protocols for this disease. He currently directs the Myasthenia Gravis Clinical Trial and Translational Research Unit at UNC where he as been the global lead investigator for several of the recently approved therapeutics for myasthenia gravis.
Dr. Howard has been a member of faculty at UNC Neurology since 1979. He is a former James F. Howard Distinguished Professor of Neuromuscular Disease and the prior Chief of the Neuromuscular Disorders division in UNC Neurology.
