David Huang, MD, PhD, director, UNC Hospitals Comprehensive Stroke Center, has received the SHAPE Award from the North Carolina Stroke Association.
SHAPE stands for Stroke Heroes Advocating Prevention and Education. The award is presented annually.
Under Huang’s leadership, the UNC Stroke Center was the first stroke program in the Southeast to receive The Joint Commission Advanced Certification as a Comprehensive Stroke Center. The Center has also received the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association Get With The Guidelines Gold Plus Achievement Award and is recognized in the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association Target Stroke Honor Roll. Hospitals receiving the Gold Plus award have maintained an aggressive goal of treating stroke patients with 85% or higher compliance in core standards of care as outlined by the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association for 12 consecutive months and have demonstrated 75% compliance in 7 out of 10 additional stroke quality measures during the 12-month period.
Huang will officially accept the award at the next meeting of the NC Stroke Association Advisory Council on April 16.
