  • All APP Nursing and APP Anesthesiology student clinical requests, placements, contracts, compliance and on boarding MUST be coordinated through the APP Center.

  • APP students MUST follow the APP Center Student Rotation Procedures detailed on this website to be considered for a clinical rotation at UNC Hospitals.

  • Participation in a rotation MUST begin with the completion of the online rotation request application located on this website.

UNC Hospitals Sites ONLY include UNC Medical Center in Chapel Hill, UNC Hospitals Hillsborough Campus as well as all UNC SOM clinics.  UNC Rex, Chatham Hospital and UNCPN are NOT part of UNC-Hospitals/SOM clinic locations where the APP Center places students.  Schools need to contact those UNC Health sites separately as they are separate entities and have their own student placement processes.

APP Center Preceptors:  Advance practice providers (NPs, PAs, CNMs, CAAs, CRNAs) who have been employed by UNC-Hospitals/SOM Clinics for at least 6 months.  It is important to note that Physicians are not APPs and are not in the pool of APP Center Preceptors.  While Physicians are out of scope for the APP Center to actively place students, an APP student who is precepted by a Physician MUST be on boarded by the APP Center.

Prioritization of Requests

Rotations are NOT based on first-come first-served basis.  APP nursing student rotation requests MUST adhere to the application deadlines and are prioritized as follows:

  1. UNC-Chapel Hill students
  2. UNC Health employees
  3. Other UNC system schools
  4. Other in state schools
  5. NC residents attending out of state programs
  6. Out of state students in out of state programs

Important Deadlines

Due to the high volume of NP, CNM, DNP and MSN student clinical rotation requests, requests must only be placed during specified date ranges so that the requests can be prioritized by the APP Center.  NP, CNM, DNP, and MSN students must apply during the appropriate time period based on the start date of the rotation.  Use the chart below to determine when to apply.  If you have more than one rotation request, you MUST submit a separate application for EACH rotation request.

IMPORTANT NOTES:

  • There are NO additional NNP Student Rotations available for the remainder of 2023.
  • There are LIMITED opportunities for Primary Care rotations at UNC Hospital/SOM Clinics (pediatrics or adult).
  • The Midwifery Division will NOT be precepting any students until Spring 2024.
  • There are NO Women’s Health rotations available in general OBGYN through Fall of 2024 for any students.   When rotations resume, general OBGYN rotations are ONLY for students who are focused on Women’s Health for their career or who have prior Women’s Health experience.  General OBGYN does not precept FNP students who need to fulfill a general women’s health requirement without an interest in women’s health.

The APP Center ONLY reviews rotation request applications that are submitting during the following time periods:
