Special Advisor to the Provost & Chancellor for Equity & Inclusion/ Interim Chief Diversity Officer, Sibby Anderson-Thompkins, and Senior Director of Education, Operations and Initiatives, Gretchen C. Bellamy, have prepared a message that addresses the continuing racial atrocities against Black people that are occurring across the country. The cumulative impact on the mental, emotional and physical well-being of Black, Indigenous and People of Color is profound. Over the course of the next few months, the University Office for Diversity and Inclusion will continue to drive efforts to challenge systemic racism and support collective healing. More than 1,200 people across the campus have signed the Roadmap for Racial Equity calls for action on a list of items intended to increase the presence of people of color in the faculty; rename buildings that bear the names of people associated with white supremacy; and have a heightened level of dialogue with the University’s top leaders.

In June 2020, the UNC Initiative for Maximizing Student Development (UNC-IMSD)** welcomed Dr. Debra Ragland as the new Assistant Director of the program. After earning a BS in Chemistry (NCA&T) and PhD in Structural Bioinformatics (UMass Medical Center), Dr. Ragland completed her postdoctoral training at the UNC SOM. She has returned to the UNC SOM from Clemson University where she served as faculty in the Department of Genetics and Biochemistry.
