Chrystal Starbird in July was recognized by the Yale Black Postdoctoral Association, which she co-founded, and the Yale SOM Office of DEI for her leadership, mentorship, and DEI service. She received the YBPA Distinguished Service Award in DEI at a ceremony near campus. In February, she’ll be starting her own lab at UNC.

Join an established interdisciplinary postdoctoral T32 fellowship program in basic and translational aspects of genetics, molecular biology, immunology, microbiology, pathophysiology and treatment of liver and gastrointestinal tract disorders. Program goals are to attract Ph.D., M.D. and DVM postdoctoral trainees to these fields and to provide training in state-of-the-art research techniques. Fellowships are for two years, and are funded by an NIH (NIDDK) Institutional T32 Training Grant.

Our DEI committee held Arabic culture night on the evening of November 17 that was open to all. Students shared their food and culture with other department members. Beka Layton, Alli Schad, Jean Cook, and Debra Ragland published a study in eLife on mental health disparities among biomedical graduate and medical students from historically excluded groups. Co-author Jean Cook, PhD, chair of the UNC Department of Biochemistry & Biophysics, has been advocating for providing more mental health resources for graduate students for years, especially during her tenure as associate dean of graduate education.
