In this study, Bergmeier lab developed a 4D (3D over time) in vivo imaging model of mouse hemostatic plug formation. With this model, they demonstrated that the accumulation of fibrin, an essential component of hemostatic plug stability, is determined by a balance of fibrin formation and degradation. The lab also examined the contribution of procoagulant platelets to the accumulation of fibrin and demonstrated that platelets are the functionally dominant procoagulant surface for fibrin accumulation in hemostasis. Abigail Ballard-Kordeliski is the first author.

Carter lab research was highlighted on May 7, 2024, in a Vineyard Books: A Blog on History and Science article entitled "Adam and Eve Existed: They Created the Genetic Code" written by Jordi Xiol and edited by Daniel Holoch examines the origin of life and the molecular Adam and Eve (the proteins responsible for creating the genetic code).

Guochun Jiang, PhD, assistant professor of biochemistry and biophysics and member of the UNC HIV Cure Center, received an R01 grant from the National Institute of Mental Health for his project “Defining the HIV reservoir and latency mechanism in human brain myeloid cells” which is funded for five years and $4.6 million which is funded through March 31, 2029.
