The Carolina Postdoctoral Program for Faculty Diversity prepares scholars from different backgrounds for faculty careers.

The UNC-CH Biochemistry and Biophysics department moves to establish a Postdoc Working Group with thanks to Kathryn Gunn and Wolfgang Bergmeier. Postdocs and research associates are encouraged to get involved. Meetings are planned quarterly. An inaugural meeting with lunch is planned for March 16th. Dr. Jonathan Fay, in collaboration with Jared Peck and Dr. Joshua Strauss of the UNC CH CryoEM Core, published a method paper in ICUrJ (International Union of Crystallography Journal) outlining their success in optimizing the function of a microscope for cryogenic electron microscopy (CryoEM).

In the fall of 2021, the Biochemistry and Biophysics departmental Environmental Task Force started a Green Lab program to encourage labs to use sustainable practices. EFT provides an update on how labs can participate.

"Our findings may help explain, for example, why certain portions of the genome are relatively susceptible to DNA damage during replication in some cancer cells," Dr. Jean Cook told WRAL Tech Wire. The first author of the study is Liu Mei, PhD, postdoc.

This research, led by Jean Cook, PhD, and Liu Mei, PhD, at the UNC School of Medicine, may help explain why certain parts of the genome become highly mutable in some cancers.
