How To Apply
The UNC Adult Neurology Residency Program is an ACGME-accredited, categorical, four-year program (PGY1-PGY4) and we are accepting seven residents per year. Applications are submitted through the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP) using the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) system.
General Application Information

We review our applications in a holistic manner without specific cut-off for grades or scores. We do not require Chair or Program Director letter as part of your Letters of Recommendations package. We strive to learn about you, your interests, values, and goals through your personal statement, letters and your activities.
The following items must be submitted to ERAS in order to schedule an interview:
- Common Application Form via ERAS
- Curriculum Vitae
- Dean’s Letter (MSPE)
- Letters of Reference (a minimum of three)
- Official Medical School Transcripts
- USMLE Transcripts or COMLEX Transcripts
- Personal Statement
Interviews
Interview invitations are sent on a rolling basis starting at the end of October with all first round invitations sent by November 30th. Waitlist positions are opened on December 1st and we continue to invite waitlisted applicants until the end of the interview season. Interviews are scheduled between mid-November to mid-January with both morning and afternoon options available.
Frequently Asked Questions
- We welcome applications from international medical graduates.
- We do not have a minimum USMLE board score cut-off requirement for interviews, but applicants who score below the mean or require repeated attempts to pass any exam are generally not competitive.
- We do not have a cut-off for year of graduation from medical school, but applicants who have had a significant time away from clinical duties are generally less competitive.
- Prior clinical experience in the United States is extremely advantageous.
- We do not offer observerships through the Residency Program.
- As with the policy required by the NRMP, all positions are filled via the NRMP. We do not offer pre-match contracts.
- All international medical graduates must be certified by the ECFMG in order to be ranked, but not prior to applying.
- UNC-CH sponsors only J-1 visas for residents. More information regarding J-1 visas can be found on the ECFMG website.
