    • Note from our seminar organizer: January 13, 2026, There has been an ongoing problem with adapters and laser pointers in 1131 Bioinformatics for our seminars. When I contacted IT I was told the following: We no longer provide USB-C to HDMI adapters for laptop cables in SOM classrooms as we cannot guarantee our adapter will work consistently with different types of user laptops. We have had too many compatibility issues with the adapters we provided, so we now recommend that you or your users purchase their own USB-C to HDMI adapters (we recommend the Apple brand adapter for MacBooks). With that being said, please make sure to either tell your guest speakers to bring their own adapter if they plan to use their laptop rather than the desktop, or have one of your own for them to use for their talk. It would also be a good idea if they could save their presentation on a flash drive to use as a backup if for some there is no adapter available at the time of their talk. I will try my best to remember to add that bit of information to the email that I send when the speakers are scheduled. I will contact the remaining faculty candidates regarding bringing their adapters if they plan to use their laptops for their talk, and just in case they forget to do so, the host can help out as well. The department may possibly be purchasing a laser printer to use for the seminars in the near future.

      • All faculty, students, and lab members should contact UNC SOM Media Relations if approached by the press. Our contact is Alan Wolf, Director of News and Media Relations, who is ready to assist you with media and interview requests. He has replaced Mark Derewicz who moved to UNC Alumni Communications. In some instances, if our employees do not want to respond, our media relations will give the press another contact name for the interview so UNC does not miss this opportunity.
    • News Coordination
      • Please coordinate your news when your paper has been accepted or your first hear of a big award with both your primary department and your affiliated departments at the same time, such as the Blood Research Center or Lineberger. We follow all media embargos. You should still notify us of your breakthrough news early on. The standard is that your primary unit will place the news on their website first, then other units will follow and give credit to the first group. This process can take 6-8 weeks.
      • To coordinate your research news (begin this process once your high-impact paper is accepted), email Carolyn Clabo, communications specialist, and our Chair, Dr. Jean Cook. Carolyn will then loop in our writer best suited for your news. As a guide from SOM: research publications are meant for your peers to read. Novel discoveries are newsworthy for their audience. Our main contact for press releases is Kendall Daniels.
      • For Vital Signs, contact Leslie Wimmer and Matthew Englund at SOM Communications. You may also use the submit news form on Vital Signs. Please email Carolyn Clabo and Jean Cook on correspondence with all press-related topics. Alan Wolf will help departments coordinate their Research News and work with press relations.
      • If a Lineberger member, please contact the Lineberger communications team to coordinate your news (always copy Carolyn Clabo and Jean Cook). Erin Sommer has replaced Bill Schaller who was promoted to the Associate Dean of External Affairs, UNC School of Social Work in October 2025.
