Carolina Competency Course Co-Directors

The Offices of Medical Student Education (OMSE) seeks co-directors of a new longitudinal course “Carolina Competency Course.” This course will span the four-year medical school curriculum beginning with orientation for matriculating students and continuing through the Transition to Residency (TTR) course.  The course directors will work closely with Curricular Affairs and Student Affairs leadership in developing and implementing this new course and will report directly to the Assistant Deans of the Pre-Clinical and Clinical Curriculum.  The course directors must be committed to curriculum evaluation with the aim of continual quality improvement.  Candidates should be knowledgeable about the current UNC School of Medicine curriculum, the interface of Student Affairs and Curricular Affairs, and have a working knowledge of competency-based education and assessment.  There is identified administrative support to help with this course.

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Outcomes: Develop, design, and implement course level objectives linked to the school’s educational objectives and competencies. Align course content with SOM Educational Program Objectives.
  • Content and Assessment: Develop curricular content and methods of andragogy appropriate for achieving the course and school’s educational objectives. This will likely include both asynchronous and synchronous learning, standardized clinical encounters, self-directed learning, and professionalism activities.
  • Integration and Coordination: Align course content with other phase specific courses when applicable.
  • Review and Improvement: Participate in regular review and revision of the course using multiple measures including national norms of accomplishment and student feedback under the auspices of the Phase Committees and Education Committee.
  • Administration:
    • Ensure that SOM educational policies are being followed within the course e.g., formative feedback, narrative assessment, grade timeliness, etc.
    • Chair the three phase level Competency Committees and develop the organizational structure and function of the committees.
    • Develop processes for a practical interface between the course directors, phase directors, competency committees, Student Progress Committee (SPC), and Committee on Professionalism Education (COPE).
    • Oversee the Transition to Application Phase (TAP) and Transition to Individualization (TIP) Courses and work with those course directors to ensure integration among phases and alignment with competencies.
    • Regularly attend the Phase and Education Committee meetings (each committee currently meets for 90 minutes once a month).

Preference will be given to candidates with knowledge about the current UNC School of Medicine curriculum and competency-based education and assessment.  Each course director will receive 20% salary support up to an educational salary cap on an annual basis. Ideal candidates will be interviewed in June 2024 with a final selection being made by the end of July. Salary support beginning September 2024. Social & Health System Science 4 Course Co-Director

The Offices of Medical Student Education (OMSE) seeks a co-director for the SHS 4 Course, which is a longitudinal course in the third year of the MD curriculum. Social and Health Systems 4 (SHS4) is a year-long course, meeting once monthly, that provides a forum in which students can reflect upon and discuss their clinical experiences from various perspectives. The course includes two components: Population Health and RICE (Critical Reflection, Inter-professional Education, Communication Skills and Ethics). This position reports to the Assistant Dean of Clinical Curriculum on behalf of the Associate Dean for Curriculum and Senior Associate Dean for Medical Student Education.

The new co-director will partner with the existing co-director, Application Phase Co-Directors, Assistant Director of Curricular Affairs for Individualization Phase with respect to the overall design, management, integration, evaluation, and enhancement of the phase as well as alignment across phases. Duties will include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Oversight: Assure logical sequencing and horizontal and vertical integration of the Social and Health Systems (SHS 4) curriculum, assure that curricular content, methods of pedagogy, and assessment are appropriate for achievement of the SOM’s educational objectives; assure that SOM educational policies are being followed within the phase.
    1. Ensure comparable curricular experience and content across regional medical campuses.
  • Health Equity content: Collaborate with the Health Equity through Education and Leadership team to design and implement a clear progression of health equity learning objectives designed to prepare students to narrow health inequities.
  • Competency-Based Assessment (CBA): Work with the Application Phase Co-directors, Senior Director of Curricular Affairs, Assistant Dean of Clinical Curriculum, and CBA task force to develop and implement competency-based education and assessment.
  • Quality Improvement: Work with the Application Phase Co-directors, Curricular Affairs, Assistant Dean of Clinical Curriculum, and
  • Clinical Phase Design: Participate in the clinical phase redesign task force, carrying key design principles and content integration into the third-year curriculum.
  • Review: Conduct regular review and revision of the curriculum using multiple measures including national norms of accomplishment and student feedback; assess whether these metrics provide the necessary information to show that the collection of courses is achieving the school-established competencies; participate actively in ensuring the SOM remains well prepared for 2027-28 LCME accreditation visit.
  • Administration: Meet regularly with the SHS 4 course directors from across the regional medical campuses.

Candidates may come from any department. Preference will be given to those who have experience with content related to Social and Health Systems Science or have taught in substantial ways in one of the phases (Foundation, Application Phaseor Individualization Phase). The co-director will receive 10% salary support up to a salary cap on an annual basis.

Competitive Specialty Career Goal Advisor

Description: The Offices of Medical Student Education is seeking a Competitive Specialty Advisor to join our Career Goal Advisors. The Competitive Specialty Advisor will focus on supporting students longitudinally from their preclinical phase through residency application who express early interest in Dermatology, Interventional Radiology, Neurosurgery, Orthopaedic Surgery, and Otolaryngology. The Competitive Specialty Advisor will meet individually with students to discuss their academic progress, and professional development, discern the best time to initiate research based on students’ records, and liaison with the respective career goal advisor for that field. The CSA will be available to them via email/in person when questions arise and document their meetings on the Navigate platform. The Competitive Specialty Advisor will be comfortable redirecting students to other parallel training paths as needed.

Support: Advisor positions are supervised by the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs and supported at 0.1 FTE to the SOM educational salary cap.

Dates: The Competitive Specialty Advisor will need to be available to start in August of 2024. The CSA will meet weekly Thursdays, 12-1, to join the Larry Keith Advisory Faculty Development Sessions. Advisors will need to be able to set aside an additional 3 hours or so per week to meet one on one with students.
