I am very pleased to share that Dr. Fletcher Pierce was named president and CEO of UNC Health Medical Group. Fletcher joins us from the 1,900-provider Sentara Medical Group in Virginia where he serves as the chief medical officer and vice president. In this role, he is responsible for primary and specialty care, GME, physician strategy, and physician leadership in service lines. Prior to assuming this role, he served for five years as vice president of medical operations for Sentara Medical Group’s Hospital-Based Specialties.

Fletcher completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Tennessee and earned his medical degree from Vanderbilt University. He served in the United States Navy for 11 years. During his military service, he also began working with Sentara Healthcare. Following his time in the Navy, he transitioned to full-time practice at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. Soon after joining the medial staff, Fletcher was appointed to a leadership role, initially serving as group Vice President of a 15-member pulmonary and critical care team. He was later promoted to chief of pulmonary and critical care for the health system. In 2019, he advanced to vice president of the specialty division and ultimately assumed the role of chief medical officer for the entire medical group.

During his tenure, Fletcher led the successful integration of five distinct medical groups throughout Virginia and North Carolina. Additionally, he oversaw significant service line expansions. Under his leadership, the cardiology and anesthesia divisions doubled in size and new practices – including plastic surgery and multiple gastroenterology clinics – were established. He also spearheaded several major initiatives, including the development of a unified communications platform spanning 12 hospitals.

It was clear during our time with Fletcher that he loves to build, to develop people, to foster relationships, and to care for the physicians who are caring for the patients to achieve the best care possible.

Fletcher and his wife are excited to move to the Triangle. They have four grown children.

Please join me in welcoming Fletcher when he officially joins UNC Health in late August.
