As part of the award, Natalie Bowman, MD, MPH, will receive $3,000 to support her research and proposed studies of the gastrointestinal manifestations of Chagas disease.

Arlene Chung, MD, and Jiandong Liu, PhD, will use their four-year, $20,000 awards to further their research and scholarly work at the UNC School of Medicine.

John Buse, MD, PhD, the Verne S. Caviness Distinguished Professor of Medicine, and Elizabeth Davis-Mayer, PhD, the Cary C. Boshamer Distinguished Professor of Nutrition and Medicine, will be honored at the annual American Diabetes Association Scientific Sessions for their clinical research and epidemiological work.

Dr. Stafford is being recognized for “his continued efforts in sports medicine and heart health. His efforts continue to impact our local communities and student-athletes across North Carolina.”

A student group founded by medical students, White Coats Black Doctors is working to increase diversity in the medical profession by supporting the development of future black physicians.

The UNC School of Medicine’s Chapter of the Student National Medical Association was awarded SNMA Chapter of the Year for their service to students of all ages and the wider North Carolina community.

By formal training, Anthony Charles ’09 (M.P.H.) is a trauma surgeon. By experience, he’s a diplomat, convincing Malawian government officials of the need for experienced surgeons.

The Medical Alumni Association actively supports many student, alumni and faculty programs.
