Cross-Sectional Imaging

The fellowship program’s core objective is to deliver exceptional clinical training in advanced body imaging modalities, encompassing CT, ultrasound, and MR imaging. This goal is achieved through faculty members’ unwavering commitment to educating residents and fellows.

This fellowship provides an unmatched blend of educational and clinical exposure, owing to the extensive caseload and diverse range of pathologies encountered daily. As a fellow, you’ll collaborate closely with esteemed academic radiologists of national and international acclaim, as well as engage with renowned clinicians.

Fellows in cross-sectional imaging will receive comprehensive training in the utilization and interpretation of cutting-edge imaging techniques, including 3-D imaging. They will also gain proficiency in protocol design and development, along with mastering a wide array of percutaneous interventional procedures.

The goals of the Cross Section Imaging Fellowship are as follows:

  • To provide additional training in the ACGME core competencies
  • Provide a rewarding experience and supportive environment for the trainee throughout the course of the year.
  • To provide trainees additional clinical experience in both adult and pediatric cross-sectional imaging to further develop and refine the necessary skill set and clinical acumen of a general radiologist.
  • To provide trainees with skills and experience necessary to perform educational, clinical or translational research in the field of radiology.
  • To provide trainees with skills necessary to function as a radiology educator, through daily interaction with junior trainees (residents and medical students) and creation of a portfolio of teaching presentations and materials over the course of the training period.

Fellows will participate regularly in clinical imaging activities, including:

  • Supervised interpretation and reporting of adult and pediatric cross-sectional imaging examinations, including CT, MRI, and ultrasound studies.
  • Protocoling of imaging studies including review of study appropriateness and selection of contrast agents.
  • Timely communication of critical findings to referring clinicians.
  • Appropriate patient hand offs and communication of critical issues related to patient care at shift changes.
  • Acting as effective consultants to clinical services when requested.
  • Case presentation in multidisciplinary clinical conferences.
  • Performance, under supervision, of minimally invasive image guided procedures (including, but not limited to, thyroid biopsy, bone and soft tissue biopsy, including all aspects related to the pre- and postprocedural care of patients and management of procedural complications.
  • Management of acute contrast reactions.
  • Assist in educating more junior residents and fellows in neuroradiologic interpretation and performance of image guided procedures.

Fellow education in the program includes mandatory attendance of clinical and nonclinical activities including, but not limited to:

  • Weekly didactic lectures given by the radiology faculty
  • Weekly interesting case conferences
  • Weekly peer learning conference
  • Departmental Grand Rounds
  • Journal clubs
  • Weekly multidisciplinary clinical conferences including Tumor Boards
  • Regular guest lectures featuring invited speakers from other institutions or UNC departments

In addition, fellows are expected to create a portfolio of resident conferences and educational materials over the course of the year, including didactic presentations, unknown case conferences, and teaching files.

Continued involvement in interpretation of imaging examinations is required of program participants, with the following expectations:

  • Fellows in the program will be expected to interpret a minimum of 2500 radiologic studies over the course of the 12-month fellowship, including both adult and pediatric CT, MRI, and US examinations. The minimum case requirement may be decreased at the discretion of the program director for greater levels of scholarly productivity.

The fellowship program is open to physicians (with MD degree) having completed a residency in diagnostic radiology. The available position for the Fellowship is dependent on the availability of funds to support it.

Fellows earn 4 weeks (20 days) of vacation for the year with an additional week of vacation over the Christmas/New Years’ holidays.
Fellows will have the opportunity for internal and external moonlighting hours.
