Gender Affirming Care
The Gender Affirming Care Clinic offers free gender affirming care on the 3rd Wednesday of every month. Our goal is to improve the health of the transgender community by providing free, culturally humble, gender-affirming care and creating opportunities for health professions students to learn about serving this community. Services include: prescriptions for hormone therapy, general primary care, letters of support for surgery, and referrals to other resources and providers.
Location & Hours
Our free medical clinic operates the 3rd Wednesday of every month from 6-9pm. We are located at:
Carrboro Community Health Center
301 Lloyd St
Carrboro, NC 27510
Our supervising providers are Dr. Karen Kimmel-Scott, Dr. Tonia Poteat, and Dr. Rita Lahlou, who are all faculty in the departments of Family and Internal Medicine at UNC and have years of clinical experience with gender affirming care. The many of our student providers are queer and/or trans, and several speak Spanish. We provide the following services:
- free visits
- prescriptions for hormone therapy
- general primary care needs
- letters of support for surgery, and
- access to other resources or referrals within SHAC and the community
At this time we are unable to offer hormones for free, but we hope to in the near future. We currently can only see people who are 18 years or older, but can provide referrals to sources of care.
We know that trans folks often experience violence and alienation in healthcare settings. At this clinic, we train the entire staff (front desk, lab staff, etc.) with the goal that trans folks who come will feel comfortable, respected and cared for.
