A project has been underway since the spring semester to update card readers at parking garage entrances and buildings. One Cards that are more than 3 years old will no longer open assigned parking gates on campus effective Sept. 1.

Please click here to read more about the work and to find out if your One Card is affected. SOM Buildings will continue to be accessed with SOM ID badges.

If you do not access a gated parking area, or need to access non-SOM buildings (Genome, Pharmacy, Public Health), you do not need to take any immediate action.

If you do use your One Card to badge into a gated parking area, check to see if you need to update your card:

  • Check to see if your One Card has the “HID Seos” mark on the back bottom left corner. If you do not see this mark, you will need to replace your card.

See the photo example on the right hand side of the page for reference or click here.

You have two options for replacing your card.

Option one: Update your card in-person at the One Card office and receive your new card immediately

  • Complete this user agreement online.
  • Find your old card and bring it with you in person to the One Card Office in the Student Stores Building (top floor) by Aug. 31 to get a new card that will allow you to open parking gates going forward.
  • The office is open 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
  • The process will take less than 10 minutes. We recommend avoiding the office Aug. 14, 16 and 18, where they will be busiest during planned student orientations.
  • Your new card will allow you to open parking gates going forward.
  • If you do not bring your old One Card when replacing, or if you are a temporary employee, the One Card office will issue a $10 charge.

Option two: Visit the One Card team at SOM on Tuesday, Aug. 8 – note that two same-day visits are required:

  • Complete this user agreement online.
  • Take your photo (Bondurant G100; 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.)
    • Bring your PID, photo ID and One Card with you
    • Onsite card printing is not available; you will need to return to pick up your new One Card and return your old One Card
    • Bring your old One Card with you
    • If you have lost your One Card, or do not bring it, you will be charged $10 cash for your new card, or, instructed to load money onto your One Card Payment Portal
  • Pick up your new One Card (Bondurant G100; 2 – 4 p.m.)
    • Bring your PID and photo ID with you
    • Bring your old One Card to exchange for your new One Card

Your new card will allow you to tap to open parking gates going forward.

If you use a smartphone app to badge into gated parking:

We are aware of mobile solutions that can be used to open gated parking areas. Some employees currently use the GET app to access gated parking areas, however, One Card credentials will need to be updated in order for it to be used to access parking gates in the future.

If you use an app, please check your One Card to see if you need to replace your card in order to access parking reliably going forward.

If you are a UNC Hospitals employee and you currently use a hospital issued gate card to access gated parking lots, you can use your hospital ID badge to tap into your assigned deck or lot going forward. Hospital issued gate cards will expire on Thursday, Aug. 31. UNC Hospitals teammates can contact the UNC Hospitals Photo ID, Parking and Transportation team with questions

If you have questions about changes, the One Card Office can be reached at 919-962-8024 or at onecard@unc.edu.
