John Buse, MD, PhD, recently stepped down from his role as senior associate dean for clinical research in the School of Medicine Office of Research and Nick Shaheen, MD, MPH, stepped into the role on Oct. 1.

The senior associate dean for clinical research provides leadership for the expansion of clinical research throughout the School of Medicine and facilitates growth of clinical trials research within the school. The role also is responsible for partnering with leaders of the School of Medicine’s new Clinical Research Alliance and the main campus ONE UNC Clinical Research efforts.

During his time as senior associate dean, Buse worked with the TraCS team to obtain 22 years of federal funding and institutional support, enabling TraCS to expand UNC-Chapel Hill’s clinical and translational workforce, transform its supporting infrastructure, and increase engagement with worldwide partners to improve health outcomes.

Shaheen is a gastroenterologist and epidemiologist known for his research on Barrett’s esophagus and for developing and testing new treatment methods for patients with Barrett’s. Additionally, he conducts clinical trials, translational research and epidemiological studies on Barrett’s esophagus.
