Gaorav Gupta, MD, PhD, has been named associate director of the UNC School of Medicine MD/PhD program. Gupta is an associate professor in the departments of radiation oncology and biochemistry and biophysics and a member of the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center. He is also the associate chair for research in radiation oncology as well as the co-leader of the UNC Lineberger Breast Cancer Research Program.
Gupta received his MD and PhD degrees from the Tri-Institutional MD-PhD Program at Weill Cornell Medicine. His research lab focuses on genome integrity pathways in the context of breast cancer initiation, progression and response to therapy. He also has a clinical practice specializing in breast cancer radiotherapy through the Department of Radiation Oncology at the N.C. Basnight Cancer Hospital.
Gupta is joining the UNC MD/PhD leadership team that is led by co-directors Toni Darville, MD, and Dr. Mohanish Deshmukh, PhD, and assistant director Alison Regan. The UNC MD/PhD Program has been a continuous NIH-designated Medical Scientist Training Program since 1999. It has approximately 100 students in training as physician scientists.
