First Gen Fellows is a program for current medical students at UNC SOM who were the first in their families to attend and graduate from college. These students have limited outlets of support from individuals who can relate to specific challenges and barriers faced in navigating medical education.
We are looking for UNC residents, fellows, and faculty members who are interested in mentoring current F1rst Gen Fellows. We would love for some of our mentors to also be First Gen, but welcome mentors of all backgrounds and specialties as long as they understand the challenges of being a F1rst Gen student.
This is meant to be a flexible commitment that involves meeting a few times per year in person or virtually at your convenience. It is a valuable opportunity to highlight mentorship experience on resident and fellow CVs.
If you are interested in becoming a mentor, please email Dr. Tiffany Long F1rst Gen Fellows Faculty Lead at tiffany.long@unchealth.unc.edu.
