Spencer Dorn, MD, MPH, MHA, has been appointed Executive Medical Director of Clinical Practice Innovation for UNC Faculty Physicians, effective January 1, 2026.

In this new role, Dr. Dorn will play a key role in strengthening collaboration between UNC Faculty Physicians and the UNC Health Information Services Division. He will help guide important initiatives across UNC Health, supporting efforts to improve clinical practice and foster innovation that benefits both clinical teams and patients.

This will include working closely with UNC Faculty Physicians President & CEO, Azita Hamedani, MD, MPH, MBA, senior leaders, and medical directors to advance the effective use of Epic@UNC, virtual care, and artificial intelligence across the faculty practice.

Dr. Dorn first came to UNC in 2005 as a gastroenterology fellow and joined the faculty in 2009. He was appointed Vice Chief of Gastroenterology & Hepatology in 2012 and Vice Chair of Medicine for Care Innovation in 2019. He earned his MD from SUNY Brooklyn, completed residency at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and received his MPH and MHA from UNC.

A professor in the Department of Medicine, Dr. Dorn has served as a lead informatics physician for UNC Health since 2012. Nationally, he is recognized as a leading voice on the role of digital technologies and artificial intelligence in clinical care and operations.
